High Level Waste in Interim Storage Facilities:
762 t HM

Other Nuclear Waste:
483 m³ low and medium level waste is stored in interim storage facilities. A final repository is expected to be commissioned in 2014. However, until now no site has been named. 4.5 million t of waste containing uranium have been generated by uranium mining activities.


Waste Management Concept for High Level Waste:

Spent fuel elements are currently stored for six years in reactor basins. Following this, it will be stored for at least 50 years in interim storage facilities. A final repository in deep geological formations can be expected in 2050, at the very earliest.

Final Disposal Situation for High Level Waste:

It seems that currently no real effort is being made to find a site for a high level waste final repository.



Problems:

No effort is being made in Romania to find a solution to the nuclear waste problem.
